CONGRESSIONAL ELECTIONS
Louisiana has two United States senators elected by the entire state for a six year staggered term. The next Senate election is in 2014. Senators take office at noon on Jan. 3 following their election.
In 2013, Louisiana will reduce from seven to six United States representatives elected from districts every two years. The next representative election is in 2012. Representatives take office at noon on Jan. 3 following their election.
The primary election for representatives in congress will be held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of an election year. The general election will be held on the fifth Saturday after the primary election.
Louisiana changed from a closed party system to an open election in Act 570 of the 2010 Regular Session, effective Jan. 1, 2011.
