Trade Name, Trademark and Service Mark Filing Instructions Print 

Carefully review all entries made to your online filing. This is an official document and requested edit(s) or change(s) to the filing will require subsequent submission of change documents and incur additional fees.

Important: Processing of registration is subject to availability of the requested name. Filings are not final until satisfactory completion of statutory requirements are verified by the Secretary of State’s office. A link to retrieve registration documents containing a validation number will be provided to the filer upon successful filing.

Preliminary availability of names can be checked through our Commercial Database. Names should be searched by spelling and phonetically for deceptive similarities.

  1. Click on what you are applying for (Trade Name, Trademark or Service Mark) – you may pick more than one. If you are registering a Trademark or Service Mark, you will be prompted later in the registration to click on the class number(s) that you want the name registered under. If goods or services are registered in more than one class, the cost will be $75 for each class registered.
  2. If applicant is registered by the Secretary of State’s office, enter the charter ID number.
  3. Enter name of Person, Corporation, Limited Liability Company or Partnership that is applying for the registration.
  4. If applicant is a corporation, list the state of incorporation.
  5. Enter full street address or P. O. Box address, including city, state and zip code of applicant.
  6. List name you are registering. If logo is included, use the following format: Trade Name, Trademark or Service Mark and logo: then describe the logo.
  7. Select box if logo is part of registration (you will be prompted to attach a PDF document of your Logo later in the registration process).
  8. List the type of goods or services to which the trade name, trademark or service mark is applied.
  9. Select “Next” button to continue.
  10. If you are registering a Trademark or Service Mark, you must click on the class number that you want the name registered under. If goods or services are registered in more than one class, the cost will be $75 for each class registered.
  11. Select “Next” button to continue.
  12. List date Trade Name, Trademark or Service Mark was first used by applicant.
  13. List date Trade Name, Trademark or Service Mark was first used in Louisiana.
  14. Type name of applicant in the electronic signature space (By typing your name, you are certifying that the information contained in our records, as reviewed by you, are accurate and you are ready to submit your filing without any changes to the record).
  15. Select the “Next” button to continue.
  16. If Logo was included, you must upload a PDF document showing your Logo.
  17. Select the “Next” button to continue.
  18. Review all information. If all is correct, click File/Checkout.
  19. Enter requested credit card information and your email address.
  20. If all information is correct, click on “Purchase Items."

Upon completion of review by our staff and compliance of Louisiana laws, you will receive an email with a link to obtain your certificate(s). 

Subscribing to our new Electronic Notification System will allow you to track any changes made to your entity via email or text message. The subscriber may also receive messages containing important information from the Secretary of State.
